BOYS tells the story of Sieger, a sporty, rather quiet 15-year-old boy who discovers love during the summer holidays. Sieger is training in the new athletics team for the national relay championships and meets the intriguing and unpredictable Marc. The friendship that develops seems nothing out of the ordinary, but Sieger secretly harbours stronger feelings for Marc. He engages in a lonely struggle with himself when it emerges that Marc is also in love with him. With his best friend Stef, Sieger discovers a motocross track outside the village. Events soon take on a momentum of their own as Sieger quickly becomes involved with Jessica. At last, he counts for something in the eyes of his tough older brother Eddy, who is secretly using the track to tear around on a moped. Sieger keeps quiet about this to his father, who often clashes with the rebellious Eddy since their mother's death. Sieger tries to make peace between the two, but his mind is elsewhere, as he finds it increasingly difficult to deny his feelings for Marc.

The hero of the Swiss/German Blue Hour (Die Blaue Stunde) is a highly successful male hustler named Theo (Andreas Herder). Wrapped up in his own expensive lifestyle, Theo plays little heed to his beautiful next-door neighbor Marie (Dina Leipzig). But when Marie's self-important boyfriend walks out without warning, Theo begins developing concern over the poor girl's plight. As a result, he falls genuinely in love for the first time in his life. And as things turn out, his first time may be his last.

Theo, an attractive German call boy, markets himself to other men in the personal ads of Berlin papers and leads an otherwise quiet life across the hall from Marie. Marie and Paul share an apartment that Marie pays for by working at a record store. A would-be writer, Paul spends his days sleeping or staring at the blank sheet of paper in his typewriter. After Paul leaves Marie for what he calls her "grotesque mediocrity," the protracted silence from across the hallway concerns Theo. Finally, on returning home one day, he observes that Marie's door is half open and ventures into her apartment to see if she is okay. Marie is devastated by Paul's departure and Theo takes it upon himself to coax her back to life. Strangely enough, he finds that she also awakens in him a desire for life that he had lost or given away to the countless men with whom he shares his body. When the two become intimate, Theo feels -- perhaps for the first time in a very long time -- that he is loved. Paul's untimely return signals the end of Theo's relationship with Marie and his life becomes once again a contrast of furtive rendezvous and bleak isolation.
